Reading and Thinking

reading Aug 2, 2024

I love to read, and while I do a good amount of it, I never really feel like I make enough time for the amount of reading I want to do. Kinda like book FOMO; I always feel like there's another book that I could be reading. Honestly, it's pretty distracting sometimes when I'm reading because I'll start to think about the other books I might be reading instead and will mentally wander off from the book I'm actually reading. Damn it! Where was I?

Part of the reason that I love reading so much is that it gives me things to think about. How can different perspectives be applied in different situations or different data be considered when assessing a challenge? More info means more possibilities for me. That said, I try to find new books rather than relying on recommendations from others (ok, so I DO enjoy some recommendations from others but try to balance them with unheard-of ones). I remember a quote from Japanese writer, Haruki Murakami, "If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking." And that's stuck with me.

I really enjoy wandering down the aisles in our local Half Price Books or this killer bookstore in Denton near UNT, Recycled Books. It's always interesting to see what I discover. So how do you find new books to read?
