The Day Your Agent Got Its Own Email Address
Google just gave enterprise AI agents their own Workspace accounts: email, calendar, Drive, OAuth scope, and audit trail. That sounds like a UX feature. It is a governance reckoning.
At Gemini at Work on October 8, Google introduced persistent coworker agents with their own organizational identity. Not a service account borrowed from a person. Not a shared inbox. An actual named presence in your directory, with a home in Drive and an activity log that IT can pull.
I have spent the past year watching clients ask a version of the same question: how do we govern agents we cannot see? You cannot audit what you cannot attribute. You cannot revoke access you never explicitly granted. That problem does not get solved by a policy document. It gets solved by identity architecture.
An agent with its own identity is an agent you can track, scope, and deprovision. That is operationally different from an agent running under a shared credential or a user personal token, which is how most agents run right now whether organizations realize it or not. The difference between those two worlds is the difference between a governed AI environment and a shadow IT situation at 10x speed.
This also reframes the Microsoft versus Google enterprise AI question. Microsoft is building agent governance through Copilot Studio, Entra permissions, and sensitivity labels. Google is building it through identity provisioning. Both approaches reflect how each company thinks about enterprise control. The battleground is your directory, and the fight is about whose model of identity governance wins inside your organization.
For teams running Microsoft-stack environments, this is the question to put on the table now: how are your agents going to be represented in Entra ID? Your peers are asking Google the same question about Workspace. The identity architecture decision is happening this quarter, not next year.
If your AI governance plan does not include an answer to what identity does this agent run under, you do not have a governance plan yet.
